Our good friends over at St Ives Holidays and St Ives TV decided to make a small movie about us and some of the stuff we like to do.. Its a great clip and theres some fantastic aerial shots from a drone including lots of action shots of our activities..
St Ives is a hip and happening place in the summer. An influx of visitors mingle with locals to create a vibrant, party atmosphere. As well as its beautiful sandy beaches, spectacular scenery and a town bustling with first-class shops, restaurants and pubs, you can enjoy scores of interesting and entertaining artistic, cultural and sporting events.
In celebration of the summer, local holiday accommodation provider Carbis Bay Holidays presents its pick of the ten best must-see events in St Ives in 2014.
One: Surf Cinema on the Beach
Make sure you visit Porthmeor Beach on the evening of Friday 20th June when St Ives Surf School will present a big screen cinema showing the latest surf lifestyle films created by Rhythm Clothing. This chilled-out local event is free for everyone to attend. Get there at 8pm for free pizza, followed by surf film screenings from 9pm.
Two: Tate St Ives 21st Birthday
Explore your artistic side by joining some of the special events at Tate St Ives to mark the gallery’s 21st birthday. During the weekend of 20th-23rd of June, you can attend free tours and talks about famous St Ives artists, or join one of the special creativity workshops.
Three: St Ives Surf School Swellboard Shootout
If there’s one event you must not miss this summer, it is this one. Join St Ives Surf School staff, local surfers and supporters on Sunday 22nd June for the Swellboard Shootout on Porthmeor Beach. You can expect fun and frolics in this most light-hearted of surf contests, as contestants take to the water in fancy dress to show off their surfing finesse – or lack of – on the waves. This charity event is an entertaining way to spend a summer Sunday.
Four: St Ives Pilot Gig Club Regatta
This regatta celebrates St Ives’ connection with the sea, as pilot gig rowers from all over Cornwall battle it out in the annual Carbis Bay to St Ives Harbour race on Sunday 29th June. This is your chance to witness this very Cornish sport derived from the times when rowers used to race out to ships for a chance to win the gig to pilot them back safe harbour. The race promises an awesome spectacle.
Five: St Ives RNLI Sportive
Forget the Tour de France. There’ll be some hot cycling action right here in St Ives on Sunday 6th July as hundreds of cyclists depart from the two for a gruelling yet scenic ride around the coast before returning to the St Ives Lifeboat Station. This fun and friendly cycling race is a charity event raising funds for the RNLI.
Six: St Ives Biathlon
Join the mayhem as crowds of competitors depart from St Ives for the annual running and swimming race on Saturday 12th July. This event organised by the St Ives Surf Life Saving Club attracts lifeguards, surfers and athletes for the race to Carbis Bay and back; while novices and juniors run as far as Porthminster Beach before swimming back to the harbour. If you’re not up for the challenge yourself, hang-around for the inevitable after-party around the harbour.
Seven: St Ives Raft Race
More shenanigans can be expected as the whole town gets together for the St Ives Raft Race. The date is yet to be confirmed but takes place each year in August. Here you can join in or spectate as hundreds of people attempt to race their home-made rafts across the harbour in colourful fancy dress. It’s a fun, charity event which also turns into one big party.
Eight: St Ives Lifeboat Day
If you’ve ever wanted to know what the RNLI does or how it works, here is your chance to find out at the St Ives Lifeboat Station open day on Thursday 07 August. You will get to see the lifeboats in action as well as a joint demonstration with a Search & Rescue helicopter from RNAS Culdrose. There will also be a BBQ, cake stalls and local goodies on sale to raise funds for the RNLI.
Nine: St Ives Summer Beer & Cider Festival
After a long summer of sporting and cultural events, we’ll all be looking forward to a good old knees up. And the St Ives Summer Beer & Cider Festival on the weekend of 9th-10th August seems like the perfect opportunity to get together for a pint or three of Cornish beer or cider. Supported by St Ives Brewery with music and entertainment, the festival looks set to be one of the best parties of the summer.
Ten: St Ives September Festival
This is the big one. Here you will see local and national artists on stage or on the streets for a two week festival of concerts, films, comedy gigs, plays, workshops, gallery visits and other cultural happenings from 13th-27th September. Major acts booked for this year’s festival include Seth Lakeman, The South, Ronnie Scott’s Allstars and The Miracle Theatre Company’s performance of The Tempest.
We look forward to meeting you in St Ives at one of these cool summer events. For more information about Carbis Bay Holidays and its collection of luxury, five star holiday accommodation visit www.carbisbayholidays.co.uk (http://www.carbisbayholidays.co.uk/)

In conjunction with International Surfing Day on Sunday 23rd June we held our 3rd annual Fancy Dress ‘Swellboard Shootout’. The event consists of teams of 4 battling it out in a tag team competion with judging criteria consisting of points for comedy, originality and of course a huge emphasis on Fancy Dress! Due to huge swell on the day the event had to be moved from Porthmeor round to a more sheltered location on the harbour side of the town… and it was pumping! The event raised over £1000 for Surfers Against sewage who also sent a team down for the day and placed a respectable 3rd! Top trumps went to ‘St Ives Surf School Jockeys’ closely followed by the Spacemen of Uranus in second. SAS turtles in 3rd and 4th was the ‘Crab Paste’. Best fancy dress was team Robie Robes as the Simpsons and best wave for nose riding a prone surfer went to Mike Lay and Matt Travis from the Gwenver team. Presentation and After party was held at The Balcony Bar where the shenanigans continued till the early hours.. Thanks to our sponsors Rhythm Europe
